The Secrets Behind The Steady Economic Growth Of Nwoya District: Can Acholi Leaders Borrow A Leaf Out Of This?
A precise note by Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong.
The story of Nwoya is serious and emotional.
When I was the Special Presidentail advisor Northern Uganda, I was moved by the level of poverty in Amuru District. Then Nwoya county was still under Amuru. We tried all our best to encourage the leaders of Amuru to stop over politicking and embrace farming. The Amuru leaders where against any investment. we later started lobbying Government for Nwoya District.
Nwoya became a district in 2010 with just one old pickup that our councillor then Mr. Oryema returned with from Amuru district. I was elected the area MP, Adong Lilly elected woman MP and Oryema Geoffrey elected LCV. We met and agreed to put aside all our political differences and focus at a common goal.
We started mobilizing those with big land to sign contracts with investors who were being kicked out of Amuru and many of them came to Nwoya district. Machines started coming to Nwoya and Agricultural mechanization became a reality. This was at the upper end.
To the ordinary people, many got jobs in these companies and we continued to mobilize them into economically viable enterprises. I linked up with Enterprise Uganda and we conducted series of trainings of our people. We opened up many SACCOs in Koch Goma, Alero, Anaka and Purongo sub county. We gave grands to our people, protected them from land grabbers/evictions. Many got engaged in serious production and in just one year, Nwoya people started demanding for a commercial bank.......
